Convention Centre, Dharamshala

Description

The Dharamshala Convention Centre, developed as part of my architectural thesis, is envisioned as a sustainable and culturally rooted public space that supports tourism and economic growth in the Kangra district. Proposed by the Himachal Pradesh Tourism Development Board (HPTDB), the centre is located at Zorawar Stadium, Sidhbari Village, spanning 21,996 sq.m.

The design draws inspiration from the Dhauladhar mountain range, reflected in its bold, asymmetrical roofline and angular built form. Key facilities include modular exhibition halls, acoustically treated auditoriums, breakout meeting rooms, a VIP lounge, and multi-level parking.

The material palette combines RCC, brick masonry, aluminum composite panels, and double-glazed glass to balance durability, aesthetics, and thermal performance. Climate-responsive features include shaded courtyards, deciduous tree buffers, high-thermal-mass walls, and a south-facing solarium for passive solar gain.

The building follows NBC 2016 guidelines and was shaped through detailed site analysis and case studies of Bharata Mandapam and Yashobhoomi. The centre seamlessly merges functionality with regional identity.
